Riverland Farm in Western Massachusetts is an established 40 acre diversified vegetable operation marketing through several wholesale accounts and a winter CSA. Our Certified Organic farm is seeking highly motivated and eager individuals to fill key positions for the 2018 season. We prefer applicants with prior farm experience but we will train the right candidate

In addition to specific responsibilities listed below all employees will be responsible for

  • Work in all aspects of vegetable production including greenhouse propagation, seeding and transplanting. Field seeding, transplanting, hoeing, hand weeding, and harvesting, etc.  

2018 Washroom manager 40-60 hours per week

Runs March 19th-Dec 18th with possibility to continue into the winter.

Responsibilities include:

  • Including overseeing and implementation of washing, processing, and packing all farm produce.
  • Harvest record keeping 
  • Maintaining inventory of washroom and packaging supplies
  • This will involve management of a small crew of helpers that may change on a daily basis.
  • Keeping quality control, cleanliness, and food safety a priority for all workers involved in the process. 
  • Maintaining inventory of produce in storage and communicating when supply is running low
  • Communicating any inconsistencies with planned harvest amounts or quality with harvest manager.
  • Always having an eye toward the next task and how to use assisting personnel in an efficient manner. 
  • Communicate with farm managers ideas for washroom improvement
  • Maintaining cleanliness of washroom on a daily basis, Compost out, Making sure nothing ends up accumulating in the space that doesn’t belong.
  • Pay is commensurate with experience starting at $12/hr.

2018 Full Time Equipment Operator  40-60 hrs/week

Runs March 19th – December 18th with possibility to continue into the winter

Responsibilities include:

  • Equipment Operation
  1. Working closely with farm managers to ensure all equipment work is being performed in a timely manner
  2. Operation of high clearance Kubota M9000, Allis Chalmers G, Case 265, and New Holland TS6030. Performing whatever tractor tasks are called for in a given day.
  3. Main tractor responsibilities will include cultivation, transplanting, and harvest
  4. Keeping a close eye on how equipment is running and performing general maintenance tasks as needed.
  5. Reporting any equipment issues to farm managers as they arise.
  • Equipment Repair
  1. Routine maintenance of implements (i.e. greasing etc)
  2. General repair of minor implement issues
  3. General repair of minor tractor issues
  • Truck Maintenance
  1. Weekly check of all the fluids in each vehicle and top off if necessary
  2. Inspection of vehicles for any issues or deterioration
  3. General Truck maintenance and basic repairs
  • Field Crew
  1. When tractor work is light or conditions unfavorable there will be field tasks to work on such as harvesting, planting, hand weed cultivation, greenhouse work, etc.

Pay is commensurate with experience starting at $13/hr.  Applicants for this position must be well versed in tractor operation. Minimum 1 experience hooking up and operating equipment on a commercial vegetable farm required.

2018 Part Time Delivery Driver approx. 36 hrs/week

Runs May 22rd – Dec 20th (there will be some additional farm work required when deliveries are light)

Responsibilities include

  • Driving an automatic transmission 16’ Cabover Box Truck or other vehicle on short and long range deliveries.
  • Ensuring that truck is running smoothly and is refueled when required. Report any potential issues with the truck to farm owners immediately.
  • Making wholesale deliveries at different locations weekly.
  • Typical hours will be 6:30 am – 12:30 pm Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday

6:30 am – 3:30pm Monday and Wednesday

  • Applicant must have some experience driving a box truck and be able to easily back it up to a loading dock.
  • Prior delivery experience dealing with invoices and customers is a plus
  • Ideal candidate for this position has driven trucks of this type consistently, is very responsible, and is able to carry out detail oriented tasks with little supervision.
  • Experience with a pallet jack is a plus
  • Pay starts at $13/ hr.

2018 Full Time Field Positions- 40-60 hrs/week

(Part time positions can be discussed but will depend on availability and scheduling needs)

Runs April 2nd – Nov 20th with possibility to continue into December

The people in these positions will fill out our core staff. This is a full-time position. Hours vary with the season but are generally between 45 and 60 hours weekly (5 and ½ day schedule Mon. - Fri. 1/2 day Sat on a rotational basis). While this is not an apprenticeship you can expect to learn a lot about running a diversified organic vegetable farm.  This is a very physically demanding job. Employees in this position will be exposed to and be responsible for carrying out work in all aspects of our farm operation including but not limited to transplant production, transplanting by hand and machine, hoeing, hand weeding, managing row cover, harvesting, washing and packing produce, operating farm vehicles. Pay starts at $11/hr

Housing

On farm housing is not available but there are ample rental possibilities in the surrounding area. Situated in the Connecticut River Valley, the farm is 10 minutes from Amherst, MA and 20 minutes from Northampton, MA. Nature and nightlife are close by. We are lucky enough to be growing on some of the best vegetable soil in the country. Come farm with us!
